Mane Attraction

Soooo... did anyone notice Chrome's mane in my last post?  You might have to click the image above to enlarge it.  The bare patch over his withers is actually on the left side and is only about an inch or two long.  The part sticking up in the middle is... well just that, sticking up in the middle.  It's about an inch long.  Then the part leading up to his poll is long.  Sigh!  It looks hideous!  Part of it was his sweet itch.  When he was scratching his shoulders he scratched his mane out too.  The part in the middle is from our stupid hay ring that was actually designed for cattle that we used when we went on vacation.  So, since he's rubbed it out so short in the middle I have two choices... roach or Mohawk.  What do you think?

......okay I just learned something.... roached is kind of like a Mohawk.....  I always thought roached was a completely shaved mane, but that's actually called hogged.  I had heard hogged before, but I thought it meant roached.  I didn't know there was a difference lol!!  So I have two options... roached or hogged?  Check out these pictures.

The three photos above are of Lady, my Appaloosa mare that I grew up with.  She has sweet itch like Chrome so she rubs her mane out too.  As you can see I kept it roached and trimmed it into a gorgeous arch.  It was cute!!

Below are some random pictures from Google just to show how it looks on a bunch of different horses.  I do not own the pictures below!

I want this black horse above!  He is gorgeous!!

This one is completely hogged.  What a pretty gray horse!!

This one shows how a bit of mane can be left at the withers when hogging a mane, but Chrome's is so short at the withers anyway that I probably won't be able to.

As thin as Chrome's mane is I'm worried it will end up looking like this (below).....  LOL!

So what is your opinion?  Roach, hog, leave it alone?  It's just hair, so it will grow back if I don't like it.  I can't wait to hear what you guys think!

  1. Now I'm confused. Some people use roached and hogged reversed, where roached is shaved to the crest and hogged is standing up like a Mohawk... so which is it??

  2. I say make it even - make it even with the shortest part of his mane. It certainly isn't a keeper :) It will grow out more quickly than you think. :)

  3. Just roach it and make it even. It should take 2-4 months to grow back in if you don't like it. I roached Mia's mane b/c of how horrible it was, it is a new, fresh start!

  4. I am a fan of a mane! Just leave it til it all grows out or even it out.

  5. I say--cut it all off and let it grow back and see what you like. He has such a pretty neck, he doesn't need a mane.

  6. If I'm not showing I've always left it alone and it has grown in even, without losing any of the length. It really is just your preference.

  8. My arab mare did that this summer and I just hacked it all off... it's growing back and will look fine eventually! :) I say go for broke and it'll grow back! It's just hair!

  9. First things first, I forgot to mention in my post that I LOVE long, thick, gorgeous manes! I mean, come on, I love Friesians and part of the appeal is the hair. :) The problem is I hate short, skimpy, ugly manes as much as I love long, thick, gorgeous manes. So having said that, I think I'm going to cut it all off. The mane he still has left is damaged and looks awful. If I leave it alone it will grow in even eventually, but the existing hair is still going to be damaged and poor quality. I'll post before and after pictures when I do it. Thanks for all of the comments guys! Trust me it is hard to cut off his mane because I really do wish he had inherited the Friesian hair gene, but to be completely honest I loved the way his mane looked when I pulled it. Short manes are definitely not my preference but they look good on him. :)

  10. I would shave it all off--you actually need to do that to get a proper mohawk. I've tried just trimming the mane, but it will not mohawk unless you shave it off and let it regrow. I LOVE Salem's 'hawk and I'm never going back!

  11. ROACH THAT BABY! :) To keep it mohawk-level, I just trim O's with scissors/clippers to keep it looking sharp and even!
