Okay I have to warn you there are some gross horse poop pictures in this post. You've been warned.
I still can't see any weight gain, but it's only been two weeks. The only thing that bothers me is that S still has loose stool. :( I wasn't that surprised at first because he was moved away from the place he's spent the last eighteen months, dewormed, new grass, new feed, new fat supplement (that he's only been on a week), new (crappy) hay, etc. However surely it should have cleared up in two weeks right?? I have two ideas... teeth and bad hay.

So do you think it's the long, stemmy hay that he's not used to or do you think it's because he needs his teeth done? I don't think he's had them done in a long time, but I'm not sure... waiting to hear back from his owner.
I'm going to find him some better hay as soon as possible. My hay isn't getting delivered for another couple of weeks, otherwise I would let him have some of mine. I'm also going to pick up some Probios for him tomorrow just to help straighten out his gut. Any other digestion supplement suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I've never dealt with loose stool in a horse before.

Other than that he is doing great. He is bright eyed and bushy tailed! He's calming down a lot. I did some work with the fly spray, but I didn't get any videos or pictures. He is extremely skittish of fly spray, but once he stops moving he will stand still until I quit, so that's good. I'll do more practice with a spray bottle full of water so I'm not wasting expensive fly spray. :)
Well that's all for now. I was too busy this weekend to do much with him unfortunately. We're gathering the supplies to build a hay shelter for this winter! I'm so excited!! :D
I'm going to say it's a combination of being de-wormed, new high fat feed, and poor quality roughage. Even with his current hay, his poos should form up as his digestive system adjusts to all the new things.

I always feed large amounts of chaff to horses I'm re-feeding (cut up hay) in case of bad dental. Also it's pretty reliably good quality.
I talked to his owner and he had his teeth done a year ago so he probably needs them done. The chaff is a great idea!! Thanks!
DeleteMiles gets loose stool sometimes too, and I have him on ProBios powder :-)
