Quick Update

Chrome was still limping so I had him checked out and he has a mild tendon strain..... luckily it's the extensor tendon in his front leg, so it should heal up with no problem, but it will be a long time before I'm riding him again.  A couple of months at least.  :(  He still doesn't limp at the walk, but it's obvious at the trot.  He doesn't act like he's in pain and even gallops sometimes, although I discourage it.  I'm thinking about putting him on a calming supplement for a little while.  Any suggestions?  I'm so glad it wasn't a flexor tendon....  So the blog is probably going to be quiet for a while longer.  Please send good thoughts and prayers that he heals up quickly and uneventfully.  This has been very stressful and terrifying for me.  He doesn't care.  He just likes all of the attention as always.  :)

  1. I'm so sorry to hear that. You need to learn from him and take one day at a time. Are you giving him any grain at all? If so, you may want to cut it back. When Cruiser bowed his tendon, I cut back his grain, and it helped settle him down. Will he be allowed in the pasture? I bet it is too hot to do much riding, anyway. Maybe you can find some clicker games to play with him.

    1. He doesn't get grain. The only time he gallops is when a horse fly is after him or when he's in the back of the pasture and I call him. So I'm keeping him coated in fly spray and going to get him instead of calling for him. What I'm worried about is when the we weather changes and starts cooling off... That's when they get frisky.

He is allowed in the pasture. How long did it take Cruiser to heal?

    2. He had a very bad tear, but I was riding in three months. It took year for full recovery. Chrome won't take that long.

  2. Good thoughts! ♥ We thought Red had the same thing when he went lame. Do some cold hoses on it to relieve pain and any swelling that may come up and be careful with turnout time. :) Even if he doesn't run around crazy, too much walking will limit the healing.

    1. He is past the acute stage already. There is no heat or swelling. It's very mild. Research is actually showing that movement is good for tendon injuries, especially since this isn't a weight bearing tendon. Even with humans and sprained ankle, they are saying the whole wrap it and use crutches thing is outdated. Keeping the tendon moving and bearing weight helps it heal back stronger.

  3. Aww good luck with Chrome. It is tough when you don't have a great place to confine them and keep them from running around. Can you section off a part of your pasture and keep him there?

I haven't had any personal experience with calming supplements, I have heard magnesium and B1 is what you want to add to the diet. Good luck, TWH came back 100% from his tendon strain, it is just time and money and more time.

    1. I will try those supplements. I really don't think he needs them because he's so laid back, but I will try it since it was suggested by a professional lol. I could set his round pen back up but I'm afraid the flies would drive him nuts if he doesn't have access to the barn.... right now he hasn't shown any interest in playing. I'll be more worried about it when he starts feeling better and it starts cooling off. That's when he might do something stupid... which is a good reason to start the calming supplement now. I'm glad to know TWH came back 100%. :)

  4. Poor Chrome! Can you put him in the round pen so he can heal?

Those big horseflies totally ignore fly spray.... :( Chrome is already improving, so fingers crossed it heals up quickly.

    2. Yes, my vet had me leading and later riding to help proper healing. They are amongst the top tendon vets in the country. Movement is very important.

  5. Sending good thoughts. I'm in the middle of rehabbing my mare through a suspensory so I know all too much about the "stressful and terrifying" part ugh!

  6. I've had good luck with Via Calm - it has both magnesium and thiamine (B-1) as well as tryptophan. Hope he does well and recovers soon!
