Ear Tufts

I wanted to share something cute about Chrome. His ear tufts!! Sorry about the fence in some of the pictures. :)

Here are some more pictures.

I love how ninety percent of the time when Chrome is dozing while standing that his ears point forward instead of falling to the side like most horses. It's so cute!!! It looks like he's awake, but he's actually asleep.

Don't you wish you could sleep while standing? I'm sure you noticed in the pictures that I have a short catch rope on him. I put it on because he was spinning away from me when I reached for the halter. He's ninety five percent over this, but just in case he decides to start the hard to catch game over again I'm leaving it on a few more days. I don't like leaving the halters on, but I will if I must. They're in a safe area where it can't be hung on anything. :)

Galaxy is doing fantastic with her leading training. She now leads happily. Occasionally she tries to walk on your heels, but she's getting better. When upset she also tends to forget about nearby humans, but she's yielding very well to halter pressure so it hasn't been a problem. I'll work on her attention soon. She also stands tied perfectly. For a horse who was supposedly not 'halter-broke', she's picked it up very fast! I'm proud of her. I think she's going to be a smart little filly. I also love the way she picks her feet up really big when she walks over something. She's going to be a great trail horse who knows how to watch her footing. If I find the time tomorrow I'll post a video of her walking through the gate. She had some gate issues because horses in general are claustrophobic, but she's getting much better!

Feeding Time

I'm so excited. Chrome met me at the gate again this morning to get fed. I think he's completely given up on playing hard to catch. He thinks it's a lot more fun to get caught and fed or brushed. :) Here is a picture of him eating.

A picture of Galaxy eating in her spot inside the round pen.

Almost done . . .

This is the huge syringe I use to give Chrome his medicine. I pulled the plunger back to show how much water I pull up. The pills dissolve in the water and make a liquid medicine that I can put in his mouth like paste wormers.

Today I brushed him all over, including his legs. I also picked up all four feet. He was a little annoyed about getting interrupted from his eating, but I'm sure it won't be long before he doesn't even pay any attention. :)

Late Night Cuddle

Sorry it took me so long to get these pictures posted. Been a little busy. :) Here are Chrome and Galaxy cuddling up for a snooze. These pictures were taken in complete darkness. Neither horse was bothered by the flash at all. :)

The new feeding routine is working out a lot better!! I do think I'll start tying Galaxy up to eat because she crowds the gate when I take Chrome out. I'm now taking him out, feeding Galaxy, giving him his medicine and then letting him eat while I groom him, take pictures and work on our desensitizing work with the lead rope. He's doing fantastic! He also met me at the gate today, so I think he's about done with his playing hard to catch game. :) Good thing. I'll post pictures tomorrow (if I have time) of him in his new eating spot.

Chrome & Galaxy Video

It isn't the greatest quality because I was using the digital camera instead of the video camera, but here is the first video of Chrome and Galaxy. I know his halter looks tight, but it's the only way to keep him from getting it off and we don't leave it on him all the time.

I've decided since Chrome is playing hard to catch that I'm going to feed him outside of the pen. This also helps keep Galaxy out of his food. So now if he wants to eat he has to be caught, haltered and led out, then he has to follow me while I feed Galaxy then he gets to go eat his food while I groom him or work on desensitizing him to a swinging lead rope.

After he eats I'll take him back to the paddock and work on more desensitizing. I've been swinging the rope all around him and waving my hands around. If I do this everyday it shouldn't take long for him to stop being so jumpy. He calms down very quickly, so I don't think he's actually scared, he's just very reactive to movement. I'll keep you updated. :)
