Chrome's Gray Progression

For those of you just joining us Chrome is a 2009 Friesian/Arabian gelding that is going gray.  On this page I will share pictures of his graying process over the years.  It's been so much fun watching him change each year and I look forward to many more years of enjoying the process.  Chrome was born bay and is now starting to dapple very lightly in the winter.  My guess is he will dapple out and then go flea bitten like his dam (he already has some flea-bitten specks on his face).  Enjoy the pictures!

Birth

(once dry you could see he was born bay)

Notice how black his legs are?  Foals that turn gray are born with black legs and foals that turn bay are born with silvery brown legs lol.  The solid, jet black legs are a sure sign straight from the start that he would turn gray.  :)

Foal

 Three months

Four months old

Weanling
(all photos under weanling are at five months old! He changes color with the lighting)

All the colors in his coat!

It's crazy how much white was in his coat at five months already!

Check out his silver his chest is!

Same day as the above pictures!

Cute!

His coat bleached out a LOT his first summer!

As he shed out for winter he got dark again.

As he started shedding out for his second summer he got more silver.

 Two Years to Three Years

 His second birthday hehe.

This one is the same day as the two above.

Still bleaching out in the summer, but not as bad as that first one.

The gray coming in on his legs is not natural!  He has sweet itch and gets sores on his legs because he chews them raw (we are working on this).  When he chews the hair off it grows back in gray.  I honestly believe if he didn't have sweet itch his legs would still be totally black.  :)

The tail pictures make me realize I need to wash his tail waaaay more often!  And just for fun I'll share mane pictures because this boy has had more different hairstyles than I have in my entire life hehe.

Full mane before sweet itch...

After he started tearing it out...

The lines so how it starts out long and then gets shorter toward his withers.

His first haircut when I cut and pulled it...

Then I tried growing it out again...

Then he started tearing it out.... again.....

So he got his next haircut.... hogged!!

So now we keep it as a mohawk and I love it!  So easy!

Trying to grow it out again in 2015....
