Galaxy Confronts the Gate

I'm going to make a Galaxy hijack of Chrome's blog. :) I'm very proud of the filly, so I thought I would share. For those of you just joining Galaxy is a grade filly that I got as company for Chrome. They said she was a Quarter horse, but I think she may have some Tennessee Walker in her. If you ever see this girl move I think you'd agree. Later in the week we're going to try to get walking and trotting video of them both.

Galaxy had never been taught to lead when we got her and probably had never even left the place where she was born, so any progress is huge for her. In a little over a week she has learned to lead. She needs work on her whoa as she has a tendency to crowd. :) Also, with horses being natural claustrophobics they usually have issues with tight spaces like gates and horse trailers. Galaxy is no different. So here is a video of her facing her gate issues . . .

I was so proud of her! I also really love the way she picks her feet way up like she thinks the pipe on the ground is going to eat her lol! I think she'll make a great trail horse eventually because she watches her footing really well. Here are some pictures of her walking around the pasture. She's doing so well. Keep an eye out either later today or tomorrow for pictures of Chrome and Galaxy going on their first road walk. :D

Ear Tufts

I wanted to share something cute about Chrome. His ear tufts!! Sorry about the fence in some of the pictures. :)

Here are some more pictures.

I love how ninety percent of the time when Chrome is dozing while standing that his ears point forward instead of falling to the side like most horses. It's so cute!!! It looks like he's awake, but he's actually asleep.

Don't you wish you could sleep while standing? I'm sure you noticed in the pictures that I have a short catch rope on him. I put it on because he was spinning away from me when I reached for the halter. He's ninety five percent over this, but just in case he decides to start the hard to catch game over again I'm leaving it on a few more days. I don't like leaving the halters on, but I will if I must. They're in a safe area where it can't be hung on anything. :)

Galaxy is doing fantastic with her leading training. She now leads happily. Occasionally she tries to walk on your heels, but she's getting better. When upset she also tends to forget about nearby humans, but she's yielding very well to halter pressure so it hasn't been a problem. I'll work on her attention soon. She also stands tied perfectly. For a horse who was supposedly not 'halter-broke', she's picked it up very fast! I'm proud of her. I think she's going to be a smart little filly. I also love the way she picks her feet up really big when she walks over something. She's going to be a great trail horse who knows how to watch her footing. If I find the time tomorrow I'll post a video of her walking through the gate. She had some gate issues because horses in general are claustrophobic, but she's getting much better!

Feeding Time

I'm so excited. Chrome met me at the gate again this morning to get fed. I think he's completely given up on playing hard to catch. He thinks it's a lot more fun to get caught and fed or brushed. :) Here is a picture of him eating.

A picture of Galaxy eating in her spot inside the round pen.

Almost done . . .

This is the huge syringe I use to give Chrome his medicine. I pulled the plunger back to show how much water I pull up. The pills dissolve in the water and make a liquid medicine that I can put in his mouth like paste wormers.

Today I brushed him all over, including his legs. I also picked up all four feet. He was a little annoyed about getting interrupted from his eating, but I'm sure it won't be long before he doesn't even pay any attention. :)
