Shocking!

Chrome has a really bad habit of slamming his chest into fences and even rubbing his chest on them.  This is very destructive when you have field fencing, so we ran an electric wire along the top of their pasture fence.  It took all day because we had to clear the brush off of the fence..... I am going to be so sore tomorrow I won't be able to move.  Clearing five acres of fencing is hard work!!  So anyway, Chrome has never seen electric fencing before so I grabbed the camera to film his reaction... I know I'm a mean momma lol.

He didn't overreact like a lot of horses I've seen do.  He just reacted to the shock, spun around and trotted away.  He's such a stoic horse!  I still remember when he had the puncture wound in his hock and the vet was digging in it and flushing it out.  Chrome lifted his hoof, but didn't react otherwise.  I think the vet was surprised lol.

Anyway I know he will have to touch it a few more times before he realizes it's the fence, because right after getting shocked he went around the barn and slammed his chest into the gate.... brat!  He will figure it out though and hopefully my fences won't take anymore damage.  Now everyone needs to keep their fingers crossed that the dang deer don't hit it while jumping over the fence and tear it up.

  1. That'll teach him!

When Traz first touched the hot fence, he flew back, then reared half a dozen times, striking dramatically at the air, as if challenging the fence to a re-match. I WISH I'd had my camera.

  2. My filly accidentally hit the electric a few days ago and is now so freaked out about the fence. Makes me wonder if she had ever touched it before because they don't typically forget about being shocked by it! But I do love electric, it sure teaches fence respect!

  3. He did react pretty well...! My gelding who has been around electric fence before bucked and kicked for 10 minutes after zapping his nose this fall! lol He then stood with his butt to the fenced and cowkicked at it for another 20 minutes... hhahaha. I think he was mostly ticked that he couldn't eat grass over the fence any more!

  5. Chrome is so reasonable - what a good boy!

My guy freaks out when I touch the fence, to repair or adjust it (turned off of course). His eyes and nostrils get huge while he snorts and prances around. He's like "How the hell can she touch the burning rope?!" He thinks I'm magical. ;D

  6. Funny :) Was curious.. What did you ever decide to do about Faran - you had wondered about finding him another home?

  9. Chrome is just trying to be cool "sure, I didn't want to rub that fence anyway."

  10. Dickie loves to slam his chest into his stall door. He has a window out the stall door. He doesn't do it at the other window either. I think he likes the loud noise of nearly breaking the door. Stinker!!!
