Chrome Ride 138 - 100 Ride Challenge Ride 24

I wasn't expecting to have anything to write about for this ride because it was a simple bareback, in a halter, for only twenty minutes ride.  However.... there is something I want to mention.  In a second. ;)

I got off work, hopped on Chrome bareback and started working on teaching him to turn on the forehand, but his stifle locked up.... I was so disappointed.  That's the first time it has locked since his trim.  I haven't been consistent with his exercises lately though because of the rain, so maybe that's it... or it could be because the last ride was so long.

I was so disappointed that I gave up on trying to teach him anything new and asked hubby if he would open the front gate so I could just ride up and down on the road in front of the house.  The ground is too wet to ride anywhere but on the road or driveways and the driveways get very boring.  He decided to walk Rocky with us because his back is too sore to ride (busy day at work).

So we walked up and down the road.  Chrome was walking really big, happy to be out, looking for the horses, enjoying himself.  I was relaxed and enjoying myself.  I kept noticing that he was staring off into the neighbor's field.  I thought he was just staring at the horses, because he was looking in that direction, but he was so intent.  I started staring in the direction he was looking and finally heard something.

It sounded like people talking and I thought it was the neighbor girl over at her barn, but then a truck pulled into view.  A guy was standing in the back of it holding a rope, yelling at the driver.  We had just made it to our driveway so I stopped Chrome and watched them.  Then I saw the horse.

They had a totally wound up, excited, freaked out horse behind the truck with a lariat around it's throat.  No halter or rope.  They were basically dragging it down the road because it wouldn't follow and wanted to go to the neighbor horse.

The horse finally got back on the road and started following them at the trot.  He kept trying to bolt up beside the truck and the guy was yelling at him to slow down and the driver to speed up.  They were coming our direction pretty fast with the horse trotting down the asphalt with his head and tail in the air.  Chrome was just staring, but I knew that wouldn't last.

Hubby opened the gate and got Rocky inside and I followed, then I did the only sane thing in the situation and got off even though I'd only been riding eleven minutes at that point lol.  We watched them drive by.  Chrome was really excited and tried pushing into the gate, but I scolded him and he stood still.  Once they were out of sight and I'd scraped my jaw off the ground (shocked at how dangerous they were being), we led the horses back down the driveway.  Chrome was trying to trot and be a dork, but he listened when I told him to knock it off.

By the time we got back to the car he was calm and I was able to climb up on the bumper and hop back on.  I decided to play it safe and just rode on the driveways for the rest of the ride.  I did quite a bit of walk/trot transitions up and down the driveway and his stifles didn't give out so the ride ended on a good note.  :)

You just never know what is going to happen with horses... especially when combined with stupid people lol.

    1. I was/am very upset about it.... I've seen people lead horses from the back of trucks before, heck I did it once as a kid, but that was with a halter, with a trained horse and at a calm walk with me sitting on the tailgate ready to jump off if I need to going very slowly. It wasn't asphalt then either. What they were doing was irresponsible, dangerous and cruel.... :-(

    2. Oh and they didn't even have their hazard lights on!! He was doing pretty good keeping the horse on the passenger side or behind the vehicle but he still could have bolted in front of another vehicle and going that speed it probably would have killed the horse and driver.... I hope nobody was hurt.....

  2. I've had more wrecks that were caused by people than by the horse misbehaving. That kind of stupidity is completely unacceptable. I'm glad that none of you got hurt.

    1. Definitely very unacceptable! Thank you. I'm glad my horses are well behaved even when excited. Also glad I saw them coming so I could get off. It would have sucked if that happened away from the house. We are lucky we were right outside the fence.

  3. OH MY GOD! I would have been absolutely outraged at this, I'd have lost my temper and it would drive me insane, i hate people that are being cruel to animals!

I'm back to blogging again after the hecticness of moving out and getting comfortable so i'm hoping to catch up on your blog over the next few days! I'm so glad that no one got hurt though

    1. I'm glad you're back! I'm looking forward to reading yours posts again. :)

I was so shocked that I didn't say or do anything except stare at them. They were so busy with the horse they never even noticed us standing there. They went by so fast I wouldn't have been able to say anything even if I could have thought of something to say. I was really upset about it and I can only hope the horse is okay.... I can't imagine what that rope was doing to his or her throat... :(
